Day/night blinds

Alternating sheer and solid bands on one continuous loop — align them for filtered light and a view of the skyline, offset them for near-solid coverage. One blind, two moods.

Why Sandown living rooms choose them

A day/night — or zebra — blind runs alternating sheer and solid horizontal bands on a single loop. Line the bands up and light filters through evenly; offset them and the blind closes to near-solid. It's a way to tune a room hour by hour without ever raising the whole blind, which matters when the "view" you're tuning is a Sandton skyline that looks different at 7am, 1pm and 9pm.

The real pitch is privacy without darkness — a sheer and a blind in one product — plus a contemporary, clean look and a fabric range that runs from light-filtering right through to semi-blockout bands.

Honest limitations

Even fully offset, a day/night blind isn't true blockout — light still seeps at the band edges, so a bedroom that genuinely needs to go dark wants a blockout roller, or a layered combination, instead. The sheer bands are also more delicate than a solid fabric if small hands or a cat reach them, and moisture-sensitive fabrics rule them out of steamy bathrooms — aluminium venetians are the better call there.

Where they earn their keep

Living rooms, dining areas, studies, and street- or courtyard-facing windows in complexes and townhouse schemes — the "privacy with light" brief that comes up constantly in body-corporate living, where you want to feel open without feeling on display.

Fit & hardware

Day/night blinds run on standard roller hardware — chain or motorised, with cassette options and a choice of inside or outside mount. That means the same fixings, the same measure process and the same tidy finish as a roller blind, just with a fabric that does a different job.

That privacy-with-light brief comes up constantly across the fringe — street-facing lounges in Morningside, high-rise living rooms in Illovo, garden-facing rooms in Rivonia, and renovated lounges opening onto the garden in Hurlingham.

What a day/night blind costs in Sandown

A day/night blind holds twice the fabric of a plain roller and the banded weave takes more making, so the band starts higher: R1,300 to R2,000 per square metre installed hand-operated, and R2,800 to R4,000 per square metre motorised. Wide banding, a hood across the roll and a semi-blockout weave all lift a window towards the top of the band.

Read them as a planning guide; they are not a quotation. A floor price applies to the small ones, since brackets, tube and fitting time hardly shift with the size of the pane. Every window in the flat is costed on its own at the measure and put in writing.
